Scorpius is a spectacular zodiac constellation, one of the few resembling its namesake. Antares is a red supergiant whose name means Rival of Mars. The constellation lies in a stunning Milky Way region, rich in clusters and nebulae including M4, M6, M7, and the Cat's Paw Nebula.

When to Observe
Scorpius is best observed during July. It is located in the SQ3 quadrant and is primarily visible from the southern hemisphere. The constellation contains 18 main stars forming its asterism, with 47 Bayer/Flamsteed designated stars in total. Its brightest star is Antares.
Mythology & History
In Greek mythology, Scorpius is the scorpion sent by Gaia to kill Orion, who had boasted he could slay any creature. Both were placed on opposite sides of the sky so they are never above the horizon together. Antares, its red heart, rivals Mars in color.
