Virgo is the second largest constellation and a zodiac member. Spica is a blue-white binary marking wheat in the maiden's hand. Virgo contains the Virgo Cluster with over 1,300 galaxies, including M49, M87, and M104 (the Sombrero Galaxy).

When to Observe
Virgo is best observed during May. It is located in the SQ3 quadrant and is primarily visible from the both hemispheres. The constellation contains 15 main stars forming its asterism, with 58 Bayer/Flamsteed designated stars in total. Its brightest star is Spica.
Mythology & History
In Greek mythology, Virgo is identified with Demeter, goddess of harvest, or her daughter Persephone. When Persephone was taken to the underworld, Demeter's grief caused winter. Virgo has also been associated with Astraea, goddess of justice (linked to Libra).
