Mythology & History

Volans was introduced by Dutch navigators Keyser and de Houtman, originally as Piscis Volans (the Flying Fish). It represents the tropical flying fish seen during their southern voyages. It appeared on Plancius's globe and later in Bayer's Uranometria.
