Waxing Crescent
A thin sliver of the Moon becomes visible on the right side (in the Northern Hemisphere) as it moves away from the Sun in our sky. The illuminated portion grows each night. The term 'waxing' means growing or increasing. This phase is visible in the western sky after sunset.
Orbital Geometry
The Moon has moved slightly east of the Sun in our sky. A small sliver of the near side catches sunlight, creating the classic crescent shape. The angle between Sun, Earth, and Moon is roughly 45°.
Visibility & Observation
Visible in the western sky after sunset, setting a few hours after the Sun. Look for Earthshine — the faint illumination of the dark portion by sunlight reflected off Earth.
Tidal Effects
Tidal range decreases as the Moon moves away from alignment with the Sun, transitioning toward neap tides.
